What is the biggest cause of fatal accidents in Nebraska?

According to statistics compiled by the Nebraska Department of Roads, 192 motorists were killed in fatal accidents on state roads in 2016 through November. (A final total of 2016 fatalities in the state will be available later this month.)

Fatal accidents occur in a number of ways. A recent report from the Auto Insurance Center, a nationwide car insurance news and information site, shows the single biggest cause of fatal accidents in Nebraska, as with most of the nation, is failure to keep in the proper lane. It is the top cause of fatalities in 29 states.

Failure to yield the right of way is tied is the most common cause of driving fatalities in six states, while reckless or careless driving accounts for the most fatalities in six states. (The statistics, which are from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatal Accident Reporting System, cover fatal accidents occurring between 2009 and 2013.) "Overcorrecting" is listed as the top cause of motor vehicle fatalities in three states.

The slightest contact can kill

It is no surprise that when vehicles move into other lanes of traffic, the results can be deadly, particularly when it results in head-on collisions. "At high speeds, even the slightest contact across lane lines can translate to deadly impact," the Auto Insurance Center report states.

If there is a silver lining to the Auto Insurance Center report, it's that Nebraska does not appear on any of the study's breakout lists for states most affected by the top causes of fatal accidents. In terms of fatalities, Arkansas is the state most affected by careless or reckless driving, while Wyoming is the state most affected by failure to keep in the proper lane. Indiana, of all states, is most affected by fatal accidents caused by road rage.

Legal options if a loved one is killed

If a family member is killed as a result of negligence by another motorist, you may be able to recover compensation in a personal injury lawsuit. It is important to consult with a knowledgeable and experienced Nebraska personal injury law firm.
